History of the Major's Inn
Following the fire of 1895, in which the Gilbert Homestead burned, Major James L. Gilbert began making plans for the building of the inn. Construction of the main front section was completed , and the first addition which included the kitchen and the former dining hall was built in 1902.
The property was bequeathed to Henry J. Gilbert Sr., in 1904 along with the stipulation that the building plans for the inn continue under the direction of William J. Woodland. In 1915, Joseph T. Gilbert III gained of the property and began construction of the large south side addition which include th present dining hall. The wing and the garage were completed in 1917.
For many years the property passed through many hands, and deteriorated substantially. In recent years, through the efforts of the Major's Inn Foundation, it's many supporters, and the residents of Gilbertsville, the Inn has become an active part of our community.
